Yet again you have been interviewed for the canoe press and failed to mention the massive contribution made to your improvement by Thames Valley legends Ed Hopper and James Farquharson who have sadly now had to retire from competitive Freestyle in order to let the youngsters have a fair crack of the whip. For shame Fleasibelle.
Sorry, it must have slipped my mind when I answered the questions - although I do remember mentioning you several times in other articles.
Well, Just for you I've rephrased a few of my answers:
How did you first become involved in kayaking? I started at Reading University Canoe Club, although it wasn't until I met Ed Hopper and James Farquharson, of Thames Valley fame, that my kayaking really started to improve.
What is it about kayaking you like so much? Meeting so many people on the river - Ed Hopper and James F being 2 of the most memorable.
Were you instantly drawn to freestyle? I paddled with the Uni club for three years .... I didn’t start freestyle until I had left uni and got my own car – I was then introduced to Hurley weir by a new-found friend: Ed Hopper, both him and James F helped me progress that year in freestyle. Particularly when they regularly shouted at me from the eddy to 'do something else'.
When did you win your first competition? I honestly can't remember! But, I'm certain Ed Hopper and James F contributed hugely to my initial success.
Did you join a canoe club? Only the university one – the majority of us stayed on in Reading after leaving university, which is when I met up with Ed Hopper, and continued paddling together for some time so I never needed to join a separate club.
What is your typical day training? I generally just go paddling at Hurley and if Ed Hopper is there he will give me some advice (these days a little more constructive than 'do something else'). Annoyingly he still seems to be able to pull off all the moves despite only paddling on rare (bi-monthly) occasions.
Are you naturally competitive? Yes, very. I spent my early freestyle days trying to better the scores of both Ed Hopper and James F, I think they both decided to give up competitive freestyle when I beat them.
What is the highlight of your career so far? Beating Ed and James.
What would be your ultimate goal to achieve in freestyle competition? I would like to win a World Championship or World Cup competition before I retire, I’ve been gradually getting closer, so maybe next time! Perhaps if Ed Hopper and James F return to competitve freestyle it will give me and added incentive to beat them once again.
What advice would you give to up and coming freestyle paddlers? Get in touch with legend Thames Valley paddlers, such as Ed Hopper and James F, to help you on your way.
